A new supporter landmark at the Stadium of Light
Sunderland AFC appointed Intaglio Creative to deliver Legends’ Way, a large-scale engraved fan stone scheme, transforming the exterior plaza at the Roker End of the Stadium of Light.
The scheme gives supporters a permanent, physical place in the club’s story, with the first phase of installation timed to land alongside the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
The first 5,000+ personalised stones were installed prior to Sunderland’s first home fixture, with further installation windows planned for later this year and into 2027. Once complete, the full scheme will be made up of 22,000 supporter stones.
Intaglio designs and installs bespoke fan personalisation and legacy stone schemes for clubs and stadiums across the UK. See more of our stadium legacy projects here.

The Challenge
Sunderland AFC wanted a landmark that did more than mark a wayfinding route. The club wanted to create a space fans would genuinely want to be part of, honouring Sunderland’s heritage, recognising key figures, and enabling fans the chance to leave their own mark.
The project needed to:
- Deliver a premium supporter stones scheme at scale
- Reflect the pride and history of Sunderland AFC
- Give supporters a range of accessible and premium options
- Work as part of a wider stadium redevelopment
- Stand up to heavy footfall while maintaining quality
The Solution
Intaglio is delivering Legends’ Way as a connected engraved fan stones scheme, built around fan pride, placemaking and long-term value.

Built around supporter choice
Legends’ Way gives fans the opportunity to choose how they become part of Sunderland’s story. Through a range of engraved fan stones and supporter stones, supporters can celebrate their own loyalty, honour family and friends, or create a lasting tribute that secures their place at the Stadium of Light. Different price points are available.

A new matchday landmark
Legends’ Way is a new focal point for fans arriving on matchdays. The redevelopment is designed to reshape the Roker End exterior into a destination in its own right, creating a visible, permanent space that connects supporters to the club before they even reach the turnstiles.

Heritage built into every step
At the heart of the scheme will sit Wembley Path, celebrating Sunderland’s iconic 1973 FA Cup victory by linking the Bob Stokoe statue with the future Jimmy Montgomery statue. Alongside this, 14 Legend Stones chosen through a fan vote will honour key figures from Sunderland’s history. The return of the historic ‘Welcome to Sunderland’ sign from Roker Park adds another powerful link between past and present, helping weave club heritage directly into the supporter experience.
The Results
Legends’ Way is already a firm fixture of matchdays at the Stadium of Light. Thousands of supporters have already cemented their place alongside the club’s history, with more to come as later phases are installed.
- A premium engraved fan stones installation (5,000+ already installed)
- Jimmy Montgomery’s statue will complete the Wembley Path, standing alongside the newly reoriented Bob Stokoe
- Fans chose all fourteen Legend Stones themselves, each honouring a different figure from Sunderland’s history
- A new focal point for the stadium approach
- A lasting tribute to both club legends and fans
Legends’ Way gives Sunderland AFC a lasting way to honour its past while giving supporters something real to be part of. For Intaglio, it’s a scheme built properly, that looks the part and means something, exactly as intended.
